On 3rd March early 80s Geoffrey Onsongo a.k.a. Deepac Braxx (The hip hop Messiah) was born to Mr. Fredrick Obwaya and Mrs. Monica Kerubo Obwaya at Nyamira Hospital Nyamira county.
He was brought up in a staunch Seventy day Adventist Christian family where he grew up to a humble young man after going through Eronge boarding primary school, and Kisii high School.
Later he proceeded to Nairobi Aviation College where he perused Mass communication and journalism. After graduating he worked with different media Organizations within the country and abroad. (Tanzania and Uganda). Currently he is an editor at Isaken Media Center International and part time student at St. Paul’s University pursuing a degree in the same field.
Musical career.
Before venturing in to Hip hop music Deepac Braxx used to sing in church choir until high school, its while in form two when he realized his talent and passion in Hip hop music which he followed.
While in high school he was an active member of Drama club, music club, and journalism club. On various occasions he won awards of best actor, best dancer and best soloist both in school and provincial level.
Before completing his forth form he teamed up with Big Brayo (currently a deejay at Lisbon club in Kisii town) Papa Virusi and Mc Miggie and did their first track ‘Ndizo hizo’, which was recorded at Caleb Tai studios in Kisii town.
The single topped on K.b.c. musical Charts hosted by John Karani and Charity karimi. The video also got considerable airplay on K.B.C.’s Mizizi Heat a musical program on K.B.C. television then followed series of interviews hence becoming one of the pioneers of hip hop music in the entire Kisii region.
Series rap battles in club Backyard sharpened his rap skills. These competitions gave him a platform to showcase his talent through which he won hearts of many hip-hop and music lovers. By the time Deepac Braxx embarked his musical career he had become a household name within Kisii region.
He became the most sort artiste to curtain raise for guest artistes who came to perform in Kisii. The like of the late E-sir, Nameless, Deux vultures, Mr. Googz and Vinnie Bnton, Wahu, Nonini, Jose Chameleon, Red sun, King kong among others.
Though his parents were not supportive to his music career Deepac Braxx did not give up. He continued writing his songs secretly and headed to studios whenever he got an opportunity.
Some of the hip hop songs he has done include Ama zangu ama zao ft Phinix, Mazzi mawanvu ft Walmo, Ni raha tu ft Phera, Naumia Moyoni ft Maryline, Chemsha Bongo ft Joan, Maisha ya Vitisho ft Gazlam, Dunia yako, Naona nazeeka sasa, Aluta continua, Lifestyle, and Sauti Ya Ghetto.
His music has enabled him to travel to all major and minor towns in Kenya well as outside Kenya to perform. He has shared stage with the likes of Professor Jay, Mwana Fa, Matonya, Sir Nature, Wanaume T.M.K. of Tanzania and in Uganda Jose Chameleon, Navio, Eddy Kenzo, Ragga Dee, Cocoa Finger, Bobi Wine, Bucha man, Bebe cool just to mention a few.
Vernacular songs.
Though Deepac Braxx is a credible hip-hop artiste, he chose to try a different style that saw ‘Omwana O’ Baba’ released. The track got a massive airplay at ‘Egesa Fm’ a Kisii vernacular radio station which encouraged the rest to follow suite.
‘Maria tiga korera’ is his second venacular track produced by Gylloh at G-hood recordz in Nairobi. The song arms to promote girl education in the society. He has used a storyline to put his message across.
He talks of a lady by the name Maria who chose fun at the expense of education and later regretted after she became pregnant. Her single mother died of heart attack when the information reached her because all her hopes were in her.
After the death of her mother all her relatives shunned her hence being forced to venture in to hawking bananas and groundnuts for survival. The father of her baby never showed up hence driving her in to single motherhood just like her mother.
Titles
Depending on how fans understand his music he has acquired several titles ie The hip hop messiah, Kisii’s finest, heavy weight, unstoppable nigga, hip hop icon, professor wa rap, Baba yao, Mazzi mawanvu, Nigga one just to mention a few.
Future prospects
For Deepac Braxx the sky is just the stepping-stone because with the talent still flowing in his blood he is not yet done. His first album ‘Ghetto Nazigala’ is his starting point. He is mature both lyrically and musically therefore ready to take Kenyan hip-hop to another level.
Achievements
Though he has never won any award Deepac Braxx has inspired many up coming artistes from the entire Kisii region.
Apart from one album under his name he teamed up with various artistes to preach peace and unite Kenyans after the disputed 2007 presidential elections which was more then one thousand Kenyans losing there lives and several of them displaced.
